A Love Note

Mother’s Day is always a time of reflection for me.  I became a mother before I could see my childhood through.  I fell in love with each of my children before ever seeing their beautiful little faces, but my undeniable love for them didn’t preclude me from being swallowed up by depression so dark and thick, I wasn’t sure I would survive. Saving my own life required that I make radical shifts that flew in the face of social norms around motherhood.  I learned then that there is no one right way to mother or to experience motherhood, and that all of the loving ways we show up in care for our loved ones are valid.

So here is a love note to the people who mother —in all their glory and fallibility— in honor of their humanity and often overlooked contributions to this world.

To all those who…

We see you.

May this Mother’s Day be a time for self-compassion, regard for your humanity, tenderness, abundant love, and recognition of your incalculable worth. You deserve it. ♥️
